I doubt any cars that new came without ABS. On a serious note, the obvious solution would have been to get off the brake, and just steer into the snow bank.

Actually my experience with ABS is in these type of situations it makes it way worse.

On my old ‘ 06 focus when the ABS kicked in on ice and snow it was like the brakes went away entirely.

Suddenly you’d be sailing towards some immovable object and barely slowing down. I needed the presence of mind to lift off the brake and reapply it more gently to stay abov e ABS threshold: then the car would stop . (Had decent Hankook I-Pike tires)

The ABS allows the wheels to turn momentarily each pulse and this enables you to steer whilst braking: on dry pavement the slight increase in stopping distance this causes over 4 wheel lockup is considered worth it in exchange for maintaining control ( “ why didn’t you turn?!”) but   on snow/ice the increase was ridiculous.

I considered finding and pulling the ABS fuse on snow days but then I sold it. Other cars I have don't seem as bad but the effect is still there.
